Manuel Ferreiro and Carlos Paulo Martínez Pereiro’s new anthology offers readers a 150-year cross-section of work from the troubadour period in Galician-Portuguese poetry. The collection, comprising 219 poems, focuses on the cantigas de amigo (‘songs of a friend’), reflecting not only the aesthetic accomplishment of the work, but also the array of different poets and subgenres involved. The anthology features work by all of the poets of the genre, and includes examples of songs for romerías (processions and pilgrimages) and bailadas (dances), mariñas and barcarolas (boating and sailing songs), together with the hybrid tear (weaving song) and alba (lovers’ parting), and some semi-parodic or satirical poems.
