First published in 1924, two years prior to the appearance of O Mariscal, Ramón Cabanillas’s operatic reworking of the Rexurdimento classic, ‘A Virxe do Cristal’ by Manuel Curros Enríquez, was the first literary opera to be written in Galician. Created at a time of national cultural and political revival, it marked a milestone in the theatrical and musical development of the Galician nation.

Manuel Ferreiro and Goretti Sanmartín Rei’s new edition of Cabanillas’s adaptation features the complete text of the libretto and an introductory analysis of the history of the period and the language and writings of the author. A later adaptation of the poem for theatre, by Roxelio Rodríguez Díaz (Buenos Aires, 1948), is included at the end of the book in the form of an appendix.
