An essay by Carlos Paulo Martínez Pereiro on the Brazilian artist and writer Maria Martins
September 2020

Professor Martínez Pereiro, a member of ILLA, takes part in the commemorative volume Como el camino empieza. Palabra e imagen para Perfecto E. Cuadrado with an essay on the heterodoxy of Maria Martíns' plastic and literary surrealism.

In the essay “'Errer dans les brouillards malsains tisés par mes désirs' - Do surrealismo heterodoxo de Maria Martins”, Carlos Paulo Martínez Pereiro addresses the figure and creation of this singularly plural Brazilian sculptor and writer who, surpassing the influence of the omnipotent avant-garde figure of the creator, founder, transgressor and first apostate Marcel Duchamp, is revealed as one of those artists and of those works that 'n'ont pas la carte', who appear to us outside of what is classified, expected or utopian. For the full understanding of the work in focus, the essay adopts an uncomfortable critical position, (re)thinking about the strangeness produced by a creator with an undeniably advanced knowledge of her times, that she lived with all intensity.
